Able to withstand or endure the beliefs, practices, or traits of others, or adverse environmental conditions

"Tolerant" means not having an adverse reaction to something.

It can refer to the absence of Allergies. Being lactose tolerant means you can eat lactose without an adverse reaction; being lactose intolerant means that lactose causes an adverse reaction in you.

It is also used socially. "I am tolerant of people who go barefoot" means that if you have to deal with a barefoot person, you do not have an adverse reaction. Instead of an adverse reaction like saying "Why don't you buy some shoes, you weirdo!" you treat them just the same as you would a person wearing shoes.
