Best answer...watch either the film (movie) or TV series MASH. MASH, although written by a Korean War vet & originally about the Korean War; was scripted by Hollywood screen-writers during the Vietnam War and was "really" about the Vietnam War. All actors reporting for filming (reporting for work) in Southern California knew they were playing Vietnam & not Korea. Besides, the way Hawk-eye, and the other doctors acted in MASH...uniforms, hair cut styles...etc. would not have been tolerated in 1950-53 (Korean War). But they certainly were in Vietnam (the hippie era).

If Korean peninsula would have fallen to either Russia or China, they would have been in a very good strategic position to control the pacific region (see the world map and see where Korean peninsula is located). During the cold war era, U.S. could not take the chance of losing the control over the pacific region.
