Political maps show states, countries, capitals etc. Physical maps show mountains and deserts, rivers and other features. Resource maps vary a lot, but generally show the distribution of a quantity someone is particularly interested in, for instance the locations of copper mines or Swimming Pools.

Geographical features include oceans and lakes, mountains, rivers, and so forth. Geographic maps show those features. Political maps show political borders, which include national borders as well as the borders of states, regions, provinces, or other political units. Historical maps show the political borders which used to exist at earlier periods of history (since borders have been re-drawn many times in the course of human history).
