Actually technology wise ASP and PHP both are Server Side Scripting languages and used to develop Web Applications like Online Shopping Cart, Learning Management System etc.

ASP (Active Server Page) is an proprietary language developed by Microsoft for designing and developing dynamic web applications. ASP runs on IIS Webserver which is also the package from Microsoft. And IIS webserver runs on Microsoft Wiindows operating system which is again the Microsoft products. So to develop the web applications one needs to purchase the above softwares to deploy and run the ASP programs. ASP usually uses MS SQL server for the Database.

PHP (PHP Hypertext Processor) is an Open Source language developed by PHP various community members all over the world. PHP runs almost on any type of web servers like IIS, Apache etc. And PHP can run on any OS platforms like Microsoft Windows, Linux, UNIX, Sun Solaris, Macintosh etc. PHP is FREE to use language and is one of the reason why it got a popularity over the Microsoft product. PHP usually uses MySQL as a database which is also the Open Source product. But PHP can support various databases available in the markets. Eg. Oracle, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, DB etc.

PHP is generally run on unix/Linux servers, though it is compatiblle with Microsoft servers as well.

ASP is run only on Microsoft servers.
