The numbers for oil indicate a viscosity. The higher the number the thicker the oil. The 5w and 10w are the viscosity of the oil when cold. It's actually formulated to be lighter weight when cold than when warm. A lower viscosity will move through the engine faster and lube it up quicker during cold start and warm up. Most manufacturers recommend 5w now in most all cars. However, during summer and if you aren't in an extremely cold climate 10w won't hurt it. Also, as engines age and the clearances become a little more loose, running a slightly heavier oil can take up some of that clearance and prolong the use of the engine.....to a point. Thick oil is never an answer for worn out bearings.
