This question should be " What is the difference between military time and civilian time?" There is no "American time" . The answer is simple. Civilian time works on a 12 hour clock, utilizing the postfixes: am and pm. Military time does not use these postfixes because it is based on a 24 hour clock. It starts at 0000 (or zero hundred hours) and runs to 2400(or twenty-four hundred hours). The first two digits are the hour and the second two digits are the minutes.
