Great Britain refers to England, Scotland and Wales.

When Northern Ireland is added, the country then gets its full, official name of 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' and is represented as such at the United Nations, where the UK is a permanent member of the Security Council. Citizens of these four places are British in international law. The status of these four parts of the UK is similar to individual States within the United States.

The British Commonwealth has changed its name and is now called the Commonwealth of Nations. It is comprised of 53 independent countries, most of which were once part of the British Empire. 17 of these countries still choose to have Queen Elizabeth II as their Head of State.

Why did the british hire mercenarirs to fight the war?

Technically, the British didn't. American history after the revolution was distorted as the new free Americans destroyed British documents in America. However the historic documents still exist as evidence here in England itself. The troops used to fight against the American Revolution all belonged to the British Commonwealth. The British Commonwealth (then known as the British Empire) is lead by the Monarch of Britain (currently Queen Elizabeth 2nd). Amongst the powers the head of the commonwealth has, is the authority to command troops which belong to another country, which is a member of the British Commonwealth. "Hired" is the wrong word. The troops were under the direct authority of the British Monarchy, they belonged to the British Commonwealth (British Empire back in those days). Even today, the Head of the British Commonwealth (the serving Monarch in England) still has authority over military assets in countries who are members of the Commonwealth.

Are only countries previously owned by England allowed to play in the commonwealth games?

The countries were never owned by England. They were part of the British empire. The Commonwealth only has countries in it that were part of the British empirel It is only the countries that are involved in the Commonwealth that can participate in the games. Some countries that were part of the British empire have chosen not to be part of the Commonwealth, so there are some countries that were in the British Empire but are not part of the Commonwealth and so they do not participate in the games.
