if 8 is pre-cs2 which im 99% sure , blending options has been introduced which makes brushes and stuff a million times better and a few keyboard shortcut and interface differences. That's the photoshop I recommend to others.

Nope - unfortunately you need at least Photoshop CS or Photoshop Elements 8 to upgrade to a CS2, 3 or 4 version. There are other ways to upgrade though - if you have any of the older Macromedia Suites, you can upgrade to a CS package.
Adobe Photoshop CS8 most likely WILL BE compatible with OS X, the most current version CS6 is compatible. At this time my crystal ball is malfunctioning, so I can't look into the future to check for you, sorry.
