Schizoids do not want friends but are generally not anxious around people and can act "normal". This does not mean that they do not suffer from social isolation, or that they do not feel lonely. People with Aspergers want to fit in but find it hard because of their bad social skills and awkwardness.

More important, people with Aspergers have characteristically rigid thought patterns and a limited range of interests. This makes it difficult to comprehend metaphor, which is taken literally. It also presents difficulties for engaging in abstract thought. Schizoids, on the other hand, are richly introspective and often have elaborate 'inner worlds' that they use to engage indirectly with the world, responding to its challenges by proxy. They are fully capable of abstractions and do not have the rigid thought patterns characteristic of the autistic spectrum.

Asperger Syndrome is very different from Schizophrenia. Asperger's is more closely related to Autism. In a nutshell, Asperger's is a problem with social interaction, while Schizophrenia is a devastating abnormality of expression and perception of reality.

Some of the characteristics that schizophrenia and Asperger's Syndrome have in common are:

* inappropriate social skills and other odd behaviors * lack of facial expressions and gestures * poor or avoidant eye contact * speaking in monotone, lack of speaking, or other speech difficulties * anxiety Children with autism have been misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia due to a similarity in symptoms. Before autism was an official diagnosis, many children with autism were labeled as having "childhood schizophrenia", which distinguished it from typical schizophrenia that usually does not occur until after puberty. Asperger's Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, was not recognized as a condition until after autism was. Since some symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome were not noticed as problems until the teen years or adulthood, it could resemble schizophrenia in the time of onset, too. So, there are several symptoms they have in common. But, schizophrenia can include hallucinations and delusions,

Some researchers are investigating whether there is a biological link between schizophrenia and autism and Asperger's Syndrome. One study indicated that one parent having had episodes of schizophrenia increases the likelihood of having a child with autism.

The big difference between schizoid and AS is that AS want to make friends but don't know how where as schizoids avoid friendships.

Schizoids may have a strong interest like AS howver they are more likely to be caught in intensive thoughts. This is why schizoid and schizophrenia are often confused. Schizo refering to split mind however schizophrenia can include sensing something that is not existing.

AS also have trouble lying where as schizoids often can lie well.

Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) is superficially similar to Asperger syndrome in a few areas, but not all, and not the important ones. The main reason why someone would think that Asperger syndrome was similar to SPD is the social withdrawal. People with SPD generally do not actually want social interaction. People with Asperger syndrome may want to be friendly, but it comes across wrong because they can't figure out how to do things that others take for granted (like say hello when someone comes into a room or do a favor for a friend). If someone with Asperger syndrome genuinely does not like social interaction, then it may be because of bullying.

The other characteristics of Asperger syndrome clearly distinguish it from SPD. They include temper tantrums, stimulation behaviors (like rocking, hand flapping, or verbal compulsions), and sensory issues. SPD has none of those, unless there is some underlying issue.

The main difference is that SPD is almost always caused by a bad childhood environment and Asperger syndrome is almost always caused by chemical or biological issues, such as a mutated gene or possibly (though this is controversial) exposure to Mercury during infancy. This means that people with SPD and Asperger syndrome have very different symptoms, even if they appear the same to an observer.
