No critical difference between the two sects. Both believe in the same 5 Islam pillars. Both have same faith in God (the one and the only one), all God prophets, all God holy books, all God Angels, the Last day for Judgment, and destiny. They all pray oriented to Kaaba. Both believe in the same Holy Quran.

The main difference is that the Sunnis accept the first four caliphs as rightful successors of prophet Mohamed (peace upon him). The Shiites consider that Ali Ibn AbouTaleb (blessed by Allah), the Prophet Cousin and his son-in-law as he married the prophet daughter Fatima, should have been the first caliph (not the fourth caliph as already happened) after prophet death and all following successors should be from the prophet descendants.

What do you think is the single most important similarity and difference between shiism and sunnism?

The most important similarity between Shiism and Sunnism is their shared belief in one God and the core tenets of Islam. The most significant difference is the disagreement over the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad, with Shiites believing in the leadership of Ali and his descendants (Imams) while Sunnis follow the consensus of the community.
