The 2001 Maxima is slightly larger and also has more hp and torque. It only ways maybe 150-200lbs more than the 1997 4th gens but it has 222hp and 217tq and with the 5spd transmission in my opinion is quite a bit faster stock to stock, though some people claim the 4th gens have more tuning capabilities. In my opinion 2002-2003 are the best maximas. They have the 3.5 CCVT motor which puts out 255hp on the same chassis as the 2001, needless to say its the fastest besides the 2010-2011. Also if it helps, the power difference between the 97 and 01's is due to a Variable Air Intake System and a Multi-capacity Muffler system, as well as updated ECU. Hope this answers your question.
