It displays multiple cells that together make up a grid consisting of rows and columns, each cell containing either alphanumeric text or numeric values. A spreadsheet cell may alternatively contain a formula that defines how the contents of that cell is to be calculated from the contents of any other cell (or combination of cells) each time any cell is updated. Spreadsheets are frequently used for financial information because of their ability to re-calculate the entire sheet automatically after a change to a single cell is made. A word processor (more formally known as document preparation system) is a computer application used for the production (including composition, editing, formatting, and possibly printing) of any sort of printable material.

So a document can be a general term to refer to a file from many applications like word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, graphics, Computer Aided Design and others.

∙ 13y agoIt is hard to draw a comparison because they are designed for very different tasks.
Word is designed to write letters and mainly focuses around text; which requires no calculation and doesn't readily change, it isn't really a mass data storage program.
Excel is structured with referenced cells to allow rapid calculations and automation, it can be used for storing data in a contiguous fashion; you could store a list of customers happily in both excel and word; but you couldn't create a trend of customer locations from that data in word.
Excel is much happier working with data that require calculations, changes rapidly requiring further entries or edits, requires statistical analysis or evaluation.
