Gentlemen (the plural of the word gentleman) were people who owned property, and were also called the "Gentry", or the "landed Gentry". Members of the Gentry were wealthy. Usually the Gentry were also members of the "nobility" and were "noblemen". The nobility were people who had "titles" that were awarded by the King. Titles included Earl, Duke, Duchess, and Sir (from being Knighted, such as Sir Galahad). "Sire" or "Your Highness" or "Your Majesty" were ways to speak to the King. Some titles were purchased by members of the Gentry, but most of them were inherited through birth. (I believe the Earls purchased their titles.)

All members of Gentry had certain required behavior rules when seen in public. That behavior became known as "Genteel", and the people who adhered to that behavior were known as "ladies and gentlemen". There are ladies and gentlemen present in today's society, though they may or may not be wealthy land owners. Christian behavior and genteel behavior are indistinguishable.

Polite manners and genteel behavior are unknown among many young people today. They are not being taught in public schools, and children seem to be growing up with no exposure to them.

A gentleman is a term for a man of good manners and conduct, while a nobleman is a member of the nobility with inherited titles and privileges. It is subjective to say which is better to be, as it depends on personal values and goals. Being a gentleman may focus more on character and behavior, while being a nobleman comes with societal status and sometimes inherited wealth.
