An accessory belt is any belt that drives additional power systems from the front crank of an engine. Typically, these "accessories" are the alternator, Power Steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. In many rear wheel drive vehicles, a belt is also used to drive the radiator fan. Typically called "V-belts," they are so named because of their wedge shaped cross section that grips the groove in the drive pulleys.
A serpentine belt is a particular kind of accessory belt design that drives all of the accessories with a single belt. It does this by winding a serpentine course around all the pulleys. Serpentine belts are wider and flatter than V-belts, and grip the pulleys with multiple shallow grooves.
Serpentine belts are considered the best contemporary solution to accessory drive requirements, as they require less engine compartments space, reduce design complexity, and are easier to change. On the down side, if they fail, you have a major problem, as all your auxiliary systems will fail at once. For this reason, they are manufactured to much higher standards, and are correspondingly more expensive.
