In Greek mythology, the Titans seem to be the children of Ouranus and the fathers of the gods. Cronus was the Titan who castrated his father, Ouranus, and seized control of the cosmos. Afraid that a son of his would duplicate his feat, Cronus swallowed his children, in turn Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon when his wife and sister, Rhea, gave birth. But when Zeus was born, Rhea gave Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes. Cronus swallowed the stone, believing that it was the baby. When he reached his majority, Zeus became Cronus' cupbearer. He married his aunt, Metis (Thought), and persuaded her to prepare a purgative for Cronus. Zeus disguised the potion in a cup of wine, and when Cronus drank it, he vomited up his children, the gods and goddesses who eventually won control of the cosmos. Another important Titan was Hyperion, who was associated with radiance and matchless beauty and splendour. With Thea, he fathered Helios (sun), Selene (moon) and Eos (dawn).
