Depends on the vehicle. Sometimes they are all the same. Sometimes the O2 sensors in front of the converter are heated while the rear ones aren't. But the main difference is that the front ones are the ones that effect how the engine runs. The rear ones don't effect how the engine runs. They are only there as a check on the catalytic converter.
In the exhaust between the engine and the catalytic converter.
From what I understand , the oxygen sensor ( s ) upstream of the catalytic converter is used in the control of the air / fuel ratio . The oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter is called a catalyst monitor and monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter
The O2 sensors are located between the exhaust manifolds and the cat converter. They screw in to the head pipes. Those are also called upstream O2 sensors and in some vehicles they are also called air/fuel sensors. There are also downstream O2 sensors that are located after the catalytic converter.
it has 2 sensors, 1 before converter another after converter in exhaust pipe.
between the exhaust manifold and catalitic converter
It has 2 ho2s sensors. One is upstream from the catylitic converter between the exhaust manifold and the cat. The other is downstream from the converter between in and the exhaust pipe going to the muffler.
The first sensor senses if the engine is running rich or lean so the ecu can adjust the fueling. The second sensor looks for a difference in readings to verify the catalytic converter is functioning properly
There are 2 oxygen sensors on an 04 frontier pickup 2.4litre. One is located after the catalytic converter (on the exhaust Pipe) and the other is between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter.
The engine will not run properly with out a functioning catalytic converter and working O2 sensors.
My Haynes repair manual shows 2 oxygen sensors mounted between the engine and catalytic converter(s) and 2 oxygen sensors mounted after the catalytic converter(s) which are called catalyst monitors and monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter(s) on your 1997 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 L SOHC engine
All O2 sensors are threaded into the exhaust system at various points. Upstream O2 sensors are located before the catalytic converter(s) and downstream O2 sensors are located after the catalytic converter(s).
