Caring has to do with a relationship that depends on a mutuality of feeling, a deep friendship that grows into intimacy. Possessiveness, I prefer "control" objectifies the partner, in other words, exerts complete control over your partner.

But! Let's say you are the woman, and the other is the man.
If the man doesn't let you work, go out, gets mad when another man calls you, or not asks, but TELLS you to do a lot of things for him, now that my good friends is possessiveness. Being protective is when they look both ways of the street before crossing, and at the same time give a gesture to not cross till he checks that the street is cleared. Also, if he asks you "where are you going", see how they say it. If he emphasizes on the 'you', possessiveness. Emphasizes on the whole question, he is just figuring out if where you are going is safe, protective.
