Sugar cane plant come from the far pacific island, via China and India to Brazil. ST..HILAIRE Begorrat, a French creole colonist, introduced it to Trinidad. People also said to be one of the main instigators of the Calypso art form. while rum on the other hand may be described as heavy or light, depending on the purity to which they are distilled. Rum produced on a continuous still is considered 'good light rum'. Rum made on potstill, in your backyard, bush rum or 'babash' may be described as heavy.

Cachaça is often confused with the rum, which is reflected in international trade and difficult to export, as in many markets such as the United States and the European Community, it is mandatory that the rum receive the designation "Brazilian rum" harming their recognition as distinct drink (Brian Morgan, "Cachaça from Brazil and Protected Geographic Indication," TED Case Studies 14, No. 2 [2004], available at http://www1.american.edu/TED/cachaca.htm [accessed on May 30, 2010]). However, it is actually two different drinks: a Brazilian law requires that liquor can only be made from the distillation of fermented sugarcane juice while rum is distilled from fermented sugarcane juice and molasses and boiled ( Daniel Cardoso et al., "Comparison Between Cachaca and Rum Using Pattern Recognition Methods," Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry 52 [2004]: 3429-33, p. 3429), what distinguishes the two drinks, both in taste and in chemical compositions: Francisco Aquino et al. "Amino acids profile of sugar cane spirit (cachaça), rum, and whiskey," Food Chemistry 108 (2008): 784-93.
