At the begining of internet, the domain extension ( .com, .org, .gov, .biz, .net, etc.) told the web surfer what type of site he was on:

  • .com => commercial
  • .org => non-profit organization
  • .gov => government related
  • .biz => buisness
  • .net => network
  • .us => USA
  • .ca => Canada
  • .co.UK => UK
  • .fr => France
  • etc.

However, now, you can have pretty much any domain extension, for almost any price, and it will not guide you to what type of site you are on.

What is the difference between org and com in a URL?

.org stand for organisation .com is comercial Above is the begining idea. Now .com is KING. It for everythings Wikipedia is your friend: .org was one of the original top-level domains, established in January 1985, originally intended for use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs. Now anyone can register a .org domain. .org was the domain commonly recommended for use by individuals, although .name and .info are now alternatives. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.org See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.com Functionally, there is no difference, and as both are unrestricted either can be used for anything the owner chooses, although .com is by far the more popular.
