Compatibilism argues that both "free will" and "determinism" are compatible and if you believe in one, then you don't necessarily disbelieve in the other.

Free will says that a person can do, think, react as they please without restraint because no-one or thing can alter those actions, however, Determinism states that individuals do, think and react because there is an unbroken chain- that spans indefinitely, of prior events.

What is the difference between self-determinism and existentialism?

Self-determinism emphasizes personal agency and the belief that individuals have control over their own destiny through choices and actions. Existentialism, on the other hand, focuses on the individual's freedom, responsibility, and search for meaning in an often chaotic and indifferent world, emphasizing the importance of creating one's own values and purpose in life. Both philosophies share a concern with individual autonomy and the idea that humans have the ability to shape their own lives, but they differ in their emphasis and approach.

Where does compatibilism in the movie stranger than fiction show?

Compatibilism is defined by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy as the belief that free will and determinism are compatible ideas, and that it is possible to believe both without being logically inconsistent. Free will is considered as one's ability to make choices free from constraints. Determinism is the concept that any state (of an object of event) is, to a larger degree, determined by prior states. An example of compatibilism in the movie Stranger than Fiction would be the speech presented to Harold by Professor Hilbert: "You will die. You will absolutely die. Even if you avoid this death, another will find you. And I guarantee that it won't be nearly as poetic or meaningful as what she's written. I'm sorry, but it's the nature of all tragedies, Harold. The hero dies, but the story lives on forever." After reading the manuscript, Harold realizes that it does have the perfect ending and informs the author that she must not change it in any way, accepting that his death is inevitable and imminent.

What is the difference between free will and determinism?

Free will is the belief that individuals have the ability to make choices and decisions independently of external factors, whereas determinism asserts that events, including human actions, are fundamentally determined by causes external to the will. In free will, individuals are seen as having agency and the ability to shape their own lives, while determinism suggests that events are bound to happen based on preceding factors.
