Democracy is a form of self-governance in which the people of the region select who will be their leaders for a given amount of time. Islam is a religion based on the Islam holy book Quran and the teachings of prophet Muhammad (see note below).

In early Islam era, democracy is expressed differently than its basic definition. During the life of prophet Muhammad he used to consult his companions and people before taking any non religious decision as how to defend Medina (the early Islam capital) and many other issues. After prophet death, the successors were elected through a nomination of one person by the leaders of the big communities and then the nominee should approved by all people before being assigned.

Currently, democracy in Islamic countries is widely different from one country to another and is depending on the country specific ruling system.

Note: Muslims as they believe in prophet Muhammad they believe also in all other God prophets (including Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus) and they believe in other God revelations (including Torah, Psalm, The Bible, and Quran).

Semantic comparisons:
democracy -a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people.
Islam -Arabic islām, submission (to the will of God)
(Merriam-Webster's dictionary)
