As a geologist I use these terms interchageably.
If you want to be more precise, "field work" could refer to every visit to the area subject of study. All the data collected from several "field work" campains result on a "field study". "Field research" could be more generic, and interchangeable for any of the other two.

A research study is the scientific way of finding information To improve an area. After the research study is done, a scientist may do a case study to gather information on a case to case, or person to person, basis.
The scope is how far the research area has explored and parameters in which the study will be operating in. The limitations are characteristics that impacted or influenced the interpretation of the findings from the research.

The problem statement tells the reader what the research intends to address. The significance of the study tells the reader how the research will various stakeholders in the topic. The significance of the study places it in the bigger context.
Information Technology (I.T.) is the study of and/or the field of technology. I.E. Computer Science. Sociology is the study of Society.

The difference between a college major and minor is that a major is the main field of study that one is interested in. A minor would be a secondary field of interest, and one can only enroll in a minor after enrolling in a major first.
