First, insanity is a legal issue, not a medical nor psychological one. Once you get the distinction, it's all a lot easer to follow. You cant have a diffierence because there is no way to compare apples and Oranges...Criminal law and pshchopathylogy are related; most of the people in institutions have real mental problems, but frankly, when one gets seriously academic: there is not such thing as medically insane, and legally insane is so rare that it serves mostly to give academicans something to write about. All of this is a reason one hears and sees so much that does not make sense on Television News reports: about people who just act craze toward other people and get in trouble with the law. It all makes sense from where one is standing: a prosecurtor who has instructions from a legislature who makes the laws that the prosecutor is supposed to pay atention to, and then a doctor, psychologist have other prespectives: and insanity is not one. Insanity is an absolute off the wall and total legal explination. I'm not about to say what it is or what it is not. For sure, it does not exist in medical experiences, and for sure it exists in law.

Is Jeffrey Dahmer cliniclly insane?

No, but he pleaded 'not guilty' on trial, saying that he was. However, he was well spoken, clean, and not insane. He answered the questions legitimately and was proven clinically un-insane. However, something was wrong with him.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------First of all, he did not plead 'not guilty', his plead was guilty but insane. People who are insane or mentally ill can be very clean. Just because a person is sick mentally does not mean they never bathe, dont get hair cuts or shaves or that they wear strange clothes. This belief is perpetuated by fictional depictions of mental illness. Jeff was CERTAINLY mentally ill. He had a sexual dysfunction called paraphilia as well as multiple personality disorders and, several other mental disorders. As far as 'clinically insane', this was and still is a constant debate among professionals. While he was quite clearly mentally ill, there are several differences between mentally ill, clinically insane and legally insane. The purpose of his trial was to determine weather or not he fit the legal definition of insanity. He may VERY WELL have been clinically insane. However, one can be clinically insane and still not be able to prove LEGAL insanity or, even if they are able to prove legal insanity, the jury could STILL find them to be legally sane. Which was the case with Jeffrey Dahmer. All the psychiatrists that evaluated him agreed that he had serious mental illness but, they held different opinions as to weather or not he was legally insane. Weather or not he was 'clinicallyinsane' was never publicly addressed but, quite possible. In either instance, he was inarguably, desperately in need of intense psychiatric treatment.

Who determines whether a person is insane?

What is the difference between an insane asylum and a psych ward?

Before psychiatry or psychological treatment existed, there were insane asylums, which were essentially prisons. No one knew how to treat mental disorders, so the sufferers were locked up, probably for the dual purpose of protecting the patient from harming himself and keeping him out of the sight of society in general.

Differentiate and explain the difference between insanity and madness?

Mad is the old English term for Mentally disturbed. For example, if you were in England, and you decided to randomly run naked through the town square, they would say that you were "Mad!!" If you were to do that in, say, New York city, perhaps? They would say that you were, "Insane!". However, there is no difference between the two, they have the same meaning.
