Real robots do simple repetitive chores such as build cars or computer chips. They are machines that don't move around usually, although the vacuum cleaner types do move. They usually have sensors that tell them the position of their working parts rather than eyes. They are controlled by a central computer complex that adjusts the speed of a whole series of assembly line actions to optimize output.
Most movie robots are Action Figures that are similar to humans. They see with eyes, they control themselves, they move around and participate in the human interactions just like other actors. Their purpose is to make the movie futuristic and add elements of danger that a human actor could not do.
