In the most simplistic terms, hardware is tangible, software is not. Things like monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, hard drives, etc. are all examples of hardware. They are actual physical devices that you can see and touch. Things like Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc. are all examples of software. They are not physical in any way - they only exist logically, within CDs or hard drives. The only way you can actually really "see" the software is by running the application on your computer.

Hardware is the physical components of a computer, like the hard drive, and other things that are tangible. Software is intangible; it's programs, it's code written by people, it's information. Take an Xbox 360 game for example. The game console is the hardware, and even the disc that the game comes on could be considered hardware, but the game itself, meaning the program, or the code that somebody had to write, which makes up the game, is the software.

There are several differences between What_is_the_difference_between_hardware_and_softwareand software. However, the fundamental difference between hardware and software is that hardware is a physical device something that you're able to touch and see. For example, the computer monitor you're viewing this text on or the mouse you're using to navigate is considered computer hardware. Software is code and instructions that tell a computer and/or What_is_the_difference_between_hardware_and_softwarehow to operate. This code can be viewed and executed using a computer or other hardware device. However, without any hardware software would not exist. An example of software is Microsoft Windows, an operating system that allows you to control your computer and other programs that run on it. Another example of software is the Internet browser you're using to view this page.
