Federal crime is anything of the sort :
- White-collar crime
- International money laundering
- Drug trafficking
- Identity theft
- RICO
- Hate crimes
- Felonies
- Gun crimes
- Computer crimes
- Immigration crimes
- Credit card and ATM fraud
- Major thefts like stealing art, jewelry, and gems
- Computer fraud
- Organized crime
- Public corruption crimes
- Intellectual property rights
They basically are stuff the government deals with i.e. the FBI, IRS or DEA.
Whereas State crimes are:
- Homicide/murder
- Assault and battery
- Robbery
- Domestic violence
- Burglary
- Aggravated assault
- Drug trafficking
- Weapons offenses
- Felonies
- Resisting with violence
- Grand theft
- False imprisonment
- Kidnapping
- Fraud offenses
- Sexual battery
- Stalking/ aggravated stalking
They all vary depending on that states jurisdiction and their own laws, but most crimes fall under state crimes anway.

∙ 15y agoThe main difference is, state police have jurisdiction within the state where they work, federal officers have jurisdiction anywhere in the U.S. Another difference is, in my state, state police officers mostly are responsible for "enforcing federal and state laws relating to traffic, investigating accidents, and criminal interdiction on roads and highways," and federal officer investigate federal crimes, such as bank robbery.

Keep in mind that different Federal agencies enforce different kinds of laws, depending on the agency they work for.
So. You have outfits like the FBI and DEA whose general jurisdiction might be nation wide. At the same time you have the Department of Veterans Affairs Police who's jurisdiction is only the grounds of the various VA Hospitals. You also have outfits like the Secret Service whose duties, other than protecting the President, include enforcing counterfeiting laws. Anything outside that gets referred to another agency.
A local police officer has very broad authority, but limited jurisdiction. A Federal Agent has very broad jurisdiction, but limited authority."

∙ 9y agoFederal and state criminal law differs because of how they are regulated. Federal criminal laws must be followed uniformly by all 50 states. State criminal laws can be made by individual states. What may be a state law in one state, may not be the same in another.

∙ 14y agoState police officers (aka: Highway patrol - State Troopers - State patrol - etc) are employed by the state government and have authority anywhere within the states borders. Local police officers work for the town/city/county/etc, that employ them and their authority usually (but not necessarily, always) ends at the geographic boundaries of the jurisdiction that employs them.
