Symptomatic treatment addresses the unpleasant complaints the patient is feeling, but doesn't actually cure the disease or address its cause. An example is decongestants for the common cold - the cold has no cure, but decongestants can help a patient breathe easier.
Specific treatment addresses the underlying cause of the malady. For instance, antivirals for herpetic infections help suppress the virus that causes cold sores and genital herpes.
