The Sunnah are those traditions that date from the time of Mohammed and recount his sayings, his actions, and his decisions as well as the cultural and political norms established in his Islamic State. The Sunnah includes the Hadiths in addition to other similar bodies of work.
Bid'ah is an alteration or modification of Muslim practice beyond the traditional understandings of the Qur'an or the Sunnah. Bid'ah is to be avoided since it creates contradictions in the Islamic religious narrative. There are questions on borderline issues as to whether an Islamic Jurisprudential decision is Bid'ah or is proper Ijtihad, which is a determination of an indeterminate dispute using the Qur'an and Sunnah to apply to a new situation. As a result some Imams will condemn new rulings as Bid'ah and others will claim it to be proper Ijtihad.
(Of course, there are wildly divergent ideas that are almost universally considered to be Bid'ah such as Irshad Manji's idea that homosexuality is permissible in Islam and ideas that are almost universally considered proper Ijtihad, such as the idea that it is permitted for Muslims to use the internet to communicate and socialize.)
