Depends. A rattlesnake's eye, for example has a vertical pupil while a cobra has a round pupil. They have adapted different eyes for different purposes (i.e. crepuscular, nocturnal, diurnal, etc.).

∙ 15y agoMost non-venomous snakes have round pupils, while most venomous snakes have slits for pupils. Not all snakes may apply, so you should try observing other characteristics, like the presence of bands or rattles.

Also there is a heat sensing pit or hole between eye and nostril on the vipers except coral, a water moccasin has different pupils than a harmless water snake, orientation of bands on coral will differ it from a harmless king (Red touch yellow-kill a fellow) For an interesting movie about snakes search "SSSssss" (name of movie)

∙ 8y agoThe only way is to make yourself knowledgeable about the venomous snakes in a particular area. External appearance is misleading. Some say the shape of the head and eyes is an indicator. The image above of a snake has a rounded head and round pupils. It is an image of the deadly mamba.
Of course, there is another method. Allow yourself to be bitten. If you die, it was venomous. If you do not die, it is probably nonvenomous.
