Whiskey is distilled in Ireland, whisky in Scotland

Here is a good article explaining the difference:

Bourbon is a specific type of whiskey.

Exactly what must be true for a whiskey to be labelled as "bourbon" varies, depending on what the law is where you live, but in general bourbon is:

  • made in the US
  • from a grain mixture consisting of at least 51% corn
  • aged in new, charred oak barrels
  • distilled to not more than 160 US proof (80% alcohol by volume)
  • entered the aging barrels at not more than 125 US proof
  • bottled at not less than 80 US proof

In the US, it is perfectly legal to label and market bourbon as whiskey, but not the other way around unless the whiskey meets all the requirements above.

Vodka is a neutral grain spirit that is not aged in wood barrels and thus has no color. It is distilled from absolutely anything and highly refined, but usually is made from wheat, rye, barley, corn, or potatoes. Whisky is made from a "wort" which is basically beer, then distilled and aged in wood barrels which gives it a distinctive color. Neither vodka or whisky will age in the bottle, but whisky does age while left in the barrel. Vodka treated with Skittles ages so rapidly that the consumer will appear to be a child who doesn't belong in a bar.

What is the main difference between wine and whisky?

There are several differences. One primary difference is that whiskey is aged in wooden barrels. Vodka, by tradition, is bottled straight from distillation. Another difference is that vodka need not come from grain. Vodka can be distilled from potatoes or even molasses, though traditional vodka is not supposed to come from molasses. A third difference is the goal of each product's distillation. The process by which whiskey is made does not frown upon and in fact encourages unique characteristics brought about by the choices of grain, fermentation, and distillation. That's why there are so many different kinds of whiskey. In contrast, the general idea of vodka is to distill it down to just alcohol and water, with as little as possible in addition to it.
