First we should clear doubt what is V- type engine?

The V-type engine has cylinders set in two rows or banks. The two rows are at an angle to each other. Most V-type engines have two banks of cylinders separated by 90°. Many modern V-type engines separate the cylinder rows by 60°. This makes the engine narrower and compact so it is easily fits in smaller engine compartment.

By increasing no. of cylinders we can increase the output of engine. We increase the cylinder in one line than it become large in size. Modern cars are compact and to come out from the basic hurdle of space limitations, v-type arrangement has developed.

V-8 Engine

It has 2 banks of cylinder and each bank consist 4 cylinders means 2*4=8 cylinders. V-8 engine is like two four -cylinder engines mounted on a single crankcase and using a single crank shaft.

V-12 Engine

It has 2 banks of cylinder and each bank consist 6 cylinder means 2*6= 12 cylinders. V-12 engine is like two six -cylinder engines mounted on a single crankcase and using a single crank shaft.

V-12 engine produce more power and torque than V-8 engine.V-8 engine has a slightly better power-to-weight ratio and less fuel consumption, thus it is more successful despite being less powerful than the best V-12 engines.
