If the atomic number of an atom is 6 it means that the atom has 6 protons, the mass number on the other hand is the total amount of protons and neutrons in the atom.

( Remember- the amount of protons equals the amount of electrons). So for example if you wanted to find out the amount of neutrons in an atom, you would subtract the atomic number from the Atomic Mass for the answer. (Whole-protons=neutrons)
