This party was primarily driven by Alexander Hamilton who correctly saw the need for this to happen from a economic stand-point, to pay off America's early debt and to establish a unified currency. The Anti-Federalists believed in strong states rights and a very minimalist federal government for many reasons. One such was a rational fear that a central government's president might be thought of as a King; whom they had just fought a revolutionary war against. Eventually the less-popular Federalists lost their power and for a period of time America had a one-party system within the Anti-Federalist party called the Democrat Republicans.
