Because it has sugar in it (lol) and it didn't come from a natural resource.

When purchasing anything, the price depends on many things. Among them is the foremost of desire. If you want something bad enough, you will pay the price for it. This is well known in advertising circles which is why a new product is so heavily advertised.

Soda, on the other hand, already has a reputation. The advertising costs go down and in store merchandising will account for most of the advertising dollars. When certain stores demand a loss leader (marketing term) for a limited time, the soda companies comply. This builds customer loyalty and name brand visibility.

Other factors such as manufacturing costs, packaging, and formula have their place too. But for just water, the costs are offset by the bottling plant. Should you want the product, you will pay the amount that the company is asking. It's a simple case of supply and demand. Generic water is much cheaper than name brand and has no additives. The additives are what make water pricey.
