The mass number of a nuclide is the sum of the mass of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Protons and Neutrons have a mass of approximately 1 Atomic Mass unit (electrons are not included since the mass relative to the mass of a proton and neutron is to small to count in the total mass. The atomic number of an atom corresponds to the number of protons in the nucleus, and that is the difference.
