How do you set the timing on a 2300 mustang
Sounds like the timing is off or you have a bad distributor.
Timing is set by the PCM and is not adjustable. The distributor should always be reinstalled in the same position it was removed from.
loosen one bolt retaining the distributor, aim your timing gun at the flywheel and rotate the distributor until the line on the flywheel lines up with the correct mark on the engine block.
0 deg -or- TDC With the distributor timing connector disconnected.
Standard is that it is pointing at the number one position on the distributor cap.
Have you loosened the retaining bolt? That is the bolt that holds the distributor in place.
10 degrees BTDC - unless engine compartment decal shows different
unscrew the distributor pull it out about half way with the distributor cap off and turn the rotor clock wise to disired position
Check distributor Check timing and timing chain Check wires and all electrical parts pertaining ignition system
You need a timing light. Hook timing light to #1 plug wire; loosen hold down bolt on the distributor and start car. While looking at timing light pointed to balancer timing marks adjust the distributor to get the timing you want. This assumes you are close to desired timing. If you are way off you will need to line up the rotor with #1 at tdc. HTH
Inside the timing chain cover there is a crank position sprocket and a sensor that connects into the side of the timing chain cover. There is also a sensor in the distributor(this is the camshaft position sensor). The connector faces the firewall. To setup your timing you have to rotate the distributor to 0 deg or you will get a P1345 code. A timing light won't help. If you don't have the right equipment you need to take it to the dealer or keep adjusting the distributor until the code goes away. Jon
