Downstream O2 sensor is an O2 sensor after the catalytic converter. Upstream O2 sensor is an O2 sensor before the catalytic converter.

About 30 things can cause the light to come on. TAke it to auto zone and have the codes read for free.

Just look and count them. They will be located on the exhaust system. Start at the exhaust manifold and go backward. There are upstream and downstream O2 sensors. Upstream is located before the catalytic converter and downstream is located after. Yes, there are 2 - an upstream and a downstream, but they are pretty difficult to count unless you know what you are looking for and where to look for them. The upstream sensor is located on the exhaust manifold on the passenger side - if you look down from the top of your engine on the passenger side, you can see it on the side near the bottom of the engine. The downstream sensor is located around the catalytic converter (in the middle, under the vehicle).

You did not specify what engine, however that is a common problem in alot of those cars, you need to remove upper and lower intake manifolds to get to sensor. Refer to repair manual if you do not have auto repair experience (and understand directions), it may be found at library or bought at parts store.

I think you are refering to the crankshaft position sensor or camshaft position sensor. Refer to the repair manual (not owners manual) that can be found at local library or bought at auto parts store to see the procedure because some cars you may need a special alignment tool to install the cam sensor, if that is the case on your car then you should probably let someone with auto repair experience do the job.

There are two ways to test it. One is by using a voltage tester and the procedure is stated in the Haynes Repair Manual at Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone. The other way is to monitor your fuel economy and the color of your exhaust. If your fuel economy sucks and your fuel isn't exactly clear (on a warm day), then you O2 might be bad. My O2 sensor is bad. I replaced one and I'm going to replace the other one too. Both were upstream, bank1 sensors.
