However, generally speaking, a desktop support position involves helping people over the phone or in person to accomplish the task at hand. This may be giving instructions with specific programs, or helping to ensure the user's computer is communicating properly on the network. A computer technician, on the other hand, is the person whose job is to figure out why the computer doesn't work and repair it. This is most likely done in an environment set up for this particular task, so that the technician can be surrounded by the tools of the trade, which can be difficult to take to the user's desk for a repair. So, the former is helping people do things on the computer, the later is fixing the computer itself.
