The truth is, no one really knows for sure. Horses are part of a order called perrisodactyla, which incudes them, rhinoceros, tapirs, as well as other extinct creatures such as chalichtotheres. This group first appeared in the Paleocene epoch, about 65 million years ago, right after the Cretaceous-Paleogene Mass Extinction, which killed off the non-avian dinosaurs. There are multiple theories as to where horses came from. Some paleontologists say they were descended from an extinct group of mammals called pantodonts such as Coryphodon. Others say they and titanotheres shared an unknown common ancestor.
55 million years ago lived a dog sized mammal called hyracotherium (sometimes called Eohippus, the dawn horse). Over the millenia natural selection resulted in their growing bigger and bigger, through several stages, resulting in the modern horse.
In order from most recent common ancestors of all living horses first, the ones that I can find are:
Plesippus
Dinohippus (500 - 1200+ pounds, existing from 10.3 to 3.6 million years ago)
Mesohippus (3 toed horse, 0.6 meters tall, 35 million years ago)
Hyracotherium (4 toed horse, 0.4 meters tall, 50 million years ago)

well its a ancestor of a horse.
The earliest ancestor of the horse (that means the first horse) evolved over 50,000,000 years ago. Eohippus was the first breed of horse to evolve and it's fossils have first clearly appeared in the Eocene and have been found in both North America and Asia.
The first horse, Eohippus, appeared in North America around one to two million years ago. This tiny animal, not much bigger than a cat, was the ancestor of all modern equines. Eohippus means "Dawn Horse".
The Eohippus, or Dawn Horse, has been extinct for thousands of years. This creature was the ancestor of modern equines.

Eohippus, meaning 'dawn horse' in Latin, is generally considered the oldest known evolutionary ancestor of today's modern horse.
Horse flies exist because they evolved from a common insect ancestor with other flies. They fill a certain niche in the ecosystem.
