Early history of East Hawthorn Sub divisions. In the 1850s nehemiah gutheridge leased and owned large tracts of land.East Hawthorn from Toorak road North along Auburn Road to Burwood Road and East to Burke Road.Stonyhurst Estate had an address of 375 Auburn Road and the mansion built on the crest of a hill on land owned by Thomas Hilliard grazier later to become Fairmount road when subdivision began in 1920Stonyhurst was a double storey building facing west to auburn Road with extensive gardens and outbuildings. It was situated exaxctly next to and north of Aidaville owned by John Jenkin and later in 1925 to become Fairmount House and sold in that year.Directly north of Stonyhurst behind a fenceline was Wisemans Athol farm, from 1873 till 1920 when that 1 acre block was subdivided as Miami Street 1921,leased by George Mowling senior. In 1936 Athol was listed as Athol flats at 8 Miami.Originally an 8 roomed house would have farmed cows anddairy and fruit trees as well as vegetables. In 1939 or 1940 Stonyhurst was demolished to make way for a duplex known as 5 and 5A,I resided at 5A from 1949 till 1978,my father moving into 5A in 1941,it was previously known as number 5 Stonyhurst Flats at no 5 Fairmount Road.THere were then, three historic properties in line,2 of which stand in part today. The Wiseman brothers Walter,Albert and Arthur who owned or farmed the land hailed ROM Widford in Hertsfordshire U.K. and set up land holdings in 1873,Athol being built by William.H.Cleverdon architect. The Wisemans owned a property Widford now on the corner of Wiseman St and Auburn Road, and Wiseman Mews is a rebuild of an earlier 1930 build on the original stables. There is also a Widford Street in Upper Hawthorn where there may have been another property.Wisemans were responsible for a great deal of subdivision. They married into Neave family hence the name Neave Street Hawthorn East. They also named other Athols. They had connections with Glenroy one of Melbournes northern suburbs and built a 2 storey mansion in Widford St Glenroy.

East Hawthorn, Victoria was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri people. European settlement began in the mid-19th century, with land being used for farming and orchards. The area experienced growth with the development of railways and tramlines in the late 19th century, leading to increased residential and commercial activity.

HISTORY OF FAIRMOUNT ROAD.EAST HAWTHORN. originally known as South Auburn the street went through in 1921 when a sub divisional sale was held in a marquis at 375 Auburn road (5 Fairmount Road,Stonyhurst.)Fairmount House opposite was sold by squatter and grazier Albert (Leslie) Williams and Stonyhurst were sold combined in February 1925. Fairmount house built in 1867 was originally known as Auburn then Aidaville.Williams named the street Fairmount after his home county of Devon from an old hotel there called Fairmount.Williams died suddenly at Fairmount House in 1929 after a kick from a horse at his country property in Apsley. The street was renowned for its red brick Californian bungalows, most of which stand to this day.The homes were occupied as Stonyhurst Estate in 1923 mainly and were built 1922/23.Plane trees were planted which are after ninety years superbly mature and ar a feature of the area.Stonyhurst a ten roomed 2 storey mansion was built in 1874 for William Hordern and was acquired in that year by the Equally wealthy Michael Dawson Junior who held it till 1902.The land in Fairmount Road was used for market gardening.Stonyhurst was acquired by L.G.Mouldey in 1940 and demolished for a brick pair known as no 5 and 5A,the latter being occupied by my father D.M.Rain in that year. There was an attempt to burn down Stonyhurst in 1931.At the time the owner was P.J.Cooney.In 1937 the Bills Thompson family moved into Fairmount house the land then being owned by the Methoduist Church.Extensive gardens and a partiere were part of the splendid gardens of Stonyhurst which faced West overloking the toorak hills. It was known as first 269 then 375 Auburn Road south.Stonyhurst was the name given by Michael Dawson from his native Dublin, and is the only name it was known by from the rates book.As speculation only the original name under Hordern may have been Retford as that was the name used by the family in Sydney and the home of Anthony horderns wife ann of her home county in England.Perhaps the name Stonyhurst should have been retained for the new street in 1921.Fairmount road was connected to Auburn Road purely as a result of sub division and was not part of a haphazard grid pattern as first may be thought. Stonyhurst lay immeadiately to the South of Wiseman's Athol the other Historic property that became in the year 1922 part of the Athol sub division The home still exists although radically altered. Philip.M.Rain Historian for East Hawthorn May 14 2010.
