In Sarasota restaurants I am already hearing customers are afraid to eat fish. I'm afraid the few waterfront restaurants that have survived the economic meltdown will not survive the oil spill.

∙ 13y agoThere really are no hard numbers yet. It certainly has an impact. No one is going to go to Louisiana to go deep sea fishing. But as far as I can tell, beaches are still open.
I've found a few links, but a clear assessment of tourism losses due to the oil spill.
Recession and unemployment are other reasons why tourism is down. Right now, with a ban on new offshore drilling, there will be more unemployment as the rigs move elsewhere.
Another factor to consider is the narrow focus of the some in the media to invite guests on their shows that make the most dire predictions coupled with clips of burning fires, and the most hardest hit areas. The sensationalism created by the media may be enough to change vacationer's venue.
