What does PCOS mean?

Every month, a woman’s ovary produces one egg for fertilization. The ovary has tiny fluid-filled sacs called follicles or cysts. As the egg grows, the follicle builds up fluid. When the egg matures, the follicle breaks open and the egg is released. It then travels through the Fallopian Tube to the uterus (womb) for fertilization. This process is called ovulation.

What is a menstruation period?

A woman has two egg sacs called ovaries. Every month, one of the ovaries releases an egg, which floats down the fallopian tubes and into the uterus. The uterus builds up a lining of blood and tissue to cushion the egg. If, at the end of the month, a male sperm cell has not fertilized the egg, it, along with the protective layer of blood and tissue, will be flushed out of the woman's vagina. A slow trickle of blood will flow out, for around 5 days. That is what's known as a woman's "period." Afterwards, the monthly cycle will start again, with a new egg being released from the ovaries. If a male sperm cell DOES fertilize the egg, then a fetus will start to grow, and in 9 months the woman will give birth to a baby.

When in a pregnancy can miscarriages occur?

A miscarriage can happen at anytime from implantation of the fertilized egg up until the 20th week, but most of them occur in the first 8 weeks. After the 20th week, it is called a stillborn birth instead of a miscarriage. A loss of pregnancy during the third trimester (after 28 weeks) is usually called a premature stillbirth and not a miscarriage.
