It depends a lot on the vehicle to be repaired. Some alternators cost less than $60, others cost a few hundred, and that's just for the part. Battery costs are similar, and generally, you'll get what you pay for. The shop time should be less than 1 hour, 2 hours at most. Most certified shops are going to charge minimum 1 hour labor at $50 to $110 per hour. There will likely also be a 'Shop Supplies' fee of a few dollars for cleaners, rags, etc. And don't forget the new alternator belt at about $20 to $50 dollars.

My advice; make a few phone calls to parts shops and get some price quotes on the parts you need (alternator, battery and belt), that's pretty much what the mechanic is going to charge for them. Then add a 'guesstimated' $150 to that (for labour and shop costs) and you'll have a reasonable estimate of the repair bill. Or, phone a few mechanical shops and ask. They should be able to give you a reasonably accurate estimate, even over the phone.

What is wrong with my 1985 Toyota Tercel Battery light and parking brake going on at the same time?

The same thing happened to my 1995 Tercel. I guessed that it was the Alternator. To test if it was, I disconnected the battery while the car was on, and it instantly turned off, which confirms that indeed the alternator is dead. My mechanic also confirmed it. I bought a new one for $95, and once the mechanic changed it, the lights turned off. The same thing happened to my 1995 Tercel. I guessed that it was the Alternator. Changed starter in 96 cavalier why is battery losing charge when car is driven?

Most likely, your starter isn't the problem. You may have a bad alternator. Usually when your battery doesn't recharge properly it's an issue with the alternator. Have a mechanic inspect the alternator if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. If it is an issue with the alternator, it's a pretty cheap fix.

It may be caused by faulty battery connections. Alternator failing, other electrical component "jammed on", - IN these case have a mechanic check the charge rate of the alternator firstly

How do you get the battery light to go off when you replace the alternator in 1999 ford windstar?

I have a 99 Windstar and when my mechanic replaced the alternator the battery light would not go out he took back about 2 alternators, stating that the alternator was not good, because the battery light stayed on. Finally, he had the last one he put in tested and it was fine, but the battery light still came on. He called a Ford mechanic and they said you have to use a ford alternator, because the computer can not recognize other brands of alternators. Once he did the light went out. He said occasionally it will recognize an off brand, but when it doesn't the battery light stays on and it can cause problems with the computer, and I believe he said the cyliniod could burn out. He just bought a re-built alternator from the ford dealer for about $199.00

How can I test my alternator to see if it is discharging my battery?

You can have the alternator tested free of charge at just about any major auto parts store. By the way, a bad alternator will not "discharge" a battery - the alternator's function is to provide the charge to the battery. If the alternator is faulty, then it is not providing the charge necessary to keep other components from discharging the battery. I had the alternator tested and it was charging. If the alternator has a bad diode, it will discharge the battery. I replaced the alternator and everything is fine.
