Yes, there are running exercise that you can do with a back injury. Jogging in place is one exercise that you can do. You can also lift your leg up and down as if you're running.
do leg lifts. stand up straight and lift 1 leg back (as if you were going to take a step backwards) about a foot out and repeat on both legs. you might want to hold on to something so you won't loose your balance.

Jumping and spinning you should learn with an instructor or advanced skater.

Im sure you mean why do boy dogs lift a leg and girl dogs don't. Well, the answer would be because if boy dogs tried to "go" without lifting their leg up they would just end up peeing on their leg. and somehow they know that they dont want that.
I have the same problem, i go to the gym to strengthen the muscles in my left leg. A good exercise is laying on the ground on your side with your legs straight and lift your bad leg up and down holding it up for atleast 5 seconds and repeat about 20 times. works for me. Water aerobics is wonderful--you can increase flexibility without doing weight bearing exercise.
