The sternum and the rib cage extends into the chest cavity and divides the chest into two as well as the pleural cavity, the mediastinum (primary source of the separation) and chest muscles that push the lungs up to cause inhalation. The rib bones and sternum not only provide a separation but they also protect each lung and the heart from being damaged.
