At 12 years old, it's a good time to establish fundamental eating routines. The answer is, of course, to "diet" the old-fashioned" way. 3 meals. Portion control. No second helpings. Fruit for snacks. Learn to trade-off if too many calories are eaten or high fat/high cal snacks are consumed. So, if you do indulge in a snack at night, then cut back a little on each portion the next day. Don't do anything exotic. Have regular family food (but no junk. no fries. no fast food. no Pizza unless you really can do just one piece).
Then if your 12 year old is in an environment where exercise is possible, then exercise. Not a lot of exercise is needed--just enough to maintain health, strength, and keep the metabolic machine running.
If a young person can do this it will set her up for life. She may not stick with it all the time but she will "know" what balance looks like and feels like.
It will take 6 months. An eternity for a 12 year old. Suggest using benchmarks such as "by Christmas you'll be 9 lbs lighter," or "by end of summer, fall, spring...whatever... you'll be 20 lbs lighter." If you say 6 - 12 months it can be overwhelming.
Finally, if self disipline/lonliness is an issue, Weight Watchers is your best bet. Again, it's not magic and it won't happen overnight, but fundamentals will be established and that's where it all matters.

If you are concerned talk with your doctor, they are the ones that look at your past and current medical history to decide if losing weight would be benificial to you.
