Basically, each different buffering method is suited for different things. Some support First in First Out Method and others Last in First Out. Think of a youtube video, you want to watch it frombeginningto end right? So what if your buffer was going in the wrong way? It would start loading the end of the video first. Thats a big problem. The same goes for other video players. In downloading games or other types of downloads, download order isn't vital as you can't play without all the files. So essentially its about load order

As far as I'm able to determine, the first method was to film it off a kinescope tube. Some of the older Jackie Gleason Honeymooner's were kinescope'd as well as some of the earlier Twilight Zone episodes. One of the way you can tell, is in the contrast ratio of the images, in that they're more `contrasty' in appearance. Later, that method (1956/57) was replaced with video tape and the video was transferred to be archived and used over and over and over and over and over again. Just ask the Sci-Fi channel.
