The Hay Wain represents a near-perfect English summer day and Constable accomplishes this by using natural light and painting realistically from his sketches of the scene. As a young boy Constable often went out "skying", sketching the clouds and sky to perfect his technique. One of Constable's most innovative techniques was to create light on water by using white paint as a highlight. This technique can be seen in The Hay Wain as the water from the stream in the foreground is disturbed by the wheels of the hay wain itself.
It is a non-figurative painting. It means it does not depict or represent anything. It is a painting - not a painting of anything.
Perspective allowed the artists to create images that looked real. Artists were able to construct an image that appeared to have depth, meaning that is it did like look flat on the canvas. The technique of making objects in the background smaller than the objects in the foreground generates a realistic, lifelike look within the painting. This led to the beginning and growth of realistic artwork during the Renaissance.
Painting is the most general term of painting. The word painting can refer to the act of applying the medium and the finished product.
