Probably the reverse switch is bad or out of alignment. You'll need a manual to find the reverse switch. It'll be somewhere on the shifter, on the transmission, or possibly somewhere in between.
If it still has a reverse, just in the wrong place, then the linkage or cable from the shift lever to the transmission has streched or fallen out of alignment.
Because the front tires alignment could be off. More specifically the Camber or Toe adjustments.
Could it be the Neutral Safety Switch is out of alignment? Thinks Reverse is Neutral? I don't know Rovers, but there is a safety switch in vehicles with Automatic Transmissions, that prohibit the vehicle from being started in a Driver or Reverse gear.

Tires do not get out of alignment they may be out of balance but not alignment. Your suspension however can be out of alignment. The only way to know for sure is to have it checked.
I have found that if your lower trans axle mount has separated from the trans axle the trans axle itself drops down about three to four inches thus taking the trans axle out of alignment making it impossible to shift into reverse.
