In a cast-iron or aluminum block, that material is not hard enough to withstand the wear of piston/piston ring movement. It is a violent explosion that occurs when the spark plugs ignites the fuel/air and the piston moves millions (billions?) of times during the life span of an engine. So the cylinder walls are lined with hardened steel, sometimes stainless steel to tolerate it.

∙ 9y agoOn heavy-duty diesels, liners make the engine easier, quicker and less expensive to rebuild. Without cylinder liners, the mechanic would have to send the block out for machine work. With liners, you just slip out the old ones and insert new.

In a wet cylinder liner the coolant of the engine runs in a space between the liner and the engine block. This gives excellent cooling, but is quite tricky to make good seal, particularly at the crank end of the cylinder.
